Concentrates 101: Resin, Rosin, and Dabs

Live resin, rosin, distillate, shatter, dabs — the concentrate menu is confusing and potent. Here is a clear map of what each one is.

Solvent versus solventless

Concentrates strip cannabis down to its cannabinoids and terpenes, reaching far higher potency than flower. The biggest dividing line is how they are made. Solvent extracts like shatter, distillate, and live resin use chemicals such as butane to pull compounds from the plant, then purge the solvent. Solventless extracts like rosin and bubble hash use only heat, pressure, or ice water — no chemicals involved.

Solventless products like live rosin command premium prices because purists prize the clean, chemical-free process and full flavor. Solvent extracts can be just as clean when properly purged and tested, and distillate in particular is the affordable workhorse behind most vape carts. A current COA confirms residual solvents passed, which is the safety point that matters most.

Flavor, potency, and how to consume

Live resin and live rosin, made from fresh-frozen cannabis, preserve the most terpene flavor and are the aromatic top tier. Distillate is potent but flavorless unless terpenes are added back. Shatter trades a little aroma for stability and shelf life. Kief and hash are the simplest, oldest concentrates and a gentle entry point.

You consume concentrates by dabbing on a heated rig, using a concentrate vaporizer, or adding kief and hash to flower. Whatever the format, doses are concentrated — even experienced smokers should take small dabs until they gauge strength. Concentrates are the deep end of the menu: efficient and flavorful, but not where beginners should start.
